BPL, World Cup, Hong Kong and China Football
Hong Kong’s football league is one of the most watched leagues in the country although the same cannot be said about it overseas. This is because the HKFA or Hong Kong Football Association do not promote the league outside of the country as it is more effective in the local scene. It is part of the East Asia Football Federation which is part of the AFC (Asian Football Federation).
Currently led by head coach Liu Chun Fai, the team’s skipper is Chan Wai Ho and plays at their home ground of the Hong Kong Stadium. It is currently ranked at 141 while their highest ever ranking was at 90 in 1996 while in 2008, it suffered its lowest ranking at 156.
Despite the rejoining of Hong Kong with China, it is still an independent football team under the FIFA tournaments that include the World Cup, the AFC Asian Cup and any other international tournaments. The team was first established in 1949 after the Second World War when they played against South Korea. Their best every outing in the Asian Cup was in 1956 when being the hosts, they finished as second runners-up. The national team had never qualified for the FIFA World Cup.
